Perhaps because it’s made of made of heavy guage clear polythene with a sturdy zipper for easy access, has a see through material so that you know what’s in the bag before you rummage through it, it’s moth resistant and so provides protection for the items inside, is a biodegradable material and is ideal for boats and caravans (see blog article on storage solutions for your clothes when traveling: http://caraselledirect.blogspot.com/2010/01/dont-let-storage-or-moths-become.html). 
Or perhaps it’s because the bag measures 60 x 45 cms (25.5" x 17.5" approx), which is just right for wardrobe storage. I think what makes it so popular though is the fact that it’s ideal for storing away those out of season sweaters… being really strong with cotton binding means you can get up to four items inside.
